Gold Mining: Will YOU Give Up Within Just THREE Feet From Your Fortune?
Sound foolish? Of course it does. Would you like to hear the entire story? I am so glad you asked, because it is a GREAT story with FABULOUS object lessons.
Unlike many so-called object lessons, these are TRUE object lessons based on a true story. Why do I say ‘based’? For several good reasons:
1.Because although I know the whole story and I know it to be true, I do not have it in front of me right now to refer to and include all of the fine points exactly as it was told to me.
2.Like all stories, in the telling is the ‘trap’ that all of us are inclined to ‘fall into’ that of altering it a little to make it ‘fit’ the picture WE have in mind.
So I will say only that MY story is ‘based’ on the original, and applied as a ‘fitting analogy’ for today’s Marketing Genre’. It is after all the story that really matters, not all of the fine details. So let’s begin shall we?
Back in the famous ‘Gold Rush Days’, there was a man from the East Coast that caught the ‘Gold Fever’. He left everything behind and headed west to stake his claim with the dream of striking it rich. After buying a claim in Colorado, he and his partner grabbed pick axes and shovels and started digging. The digging soon paid off …
Within a month gold was struck!
However, just two men could not mine the claim with shovels and pick axes. So, the East Coast gentleman carefully covered up the mine and returned home. He told no one of his great find except his close family who came up with the money to buy the expensive machinery that was necessary to dig the mine properly.
The first batch that was mined with the machinery was sent off to be smelted and tested for gold. The results were astounding. The claim was estimated to be one of the biggest gold finds in the history of Colorado! Possibly worth many Milllions.
It would take only a few more batches like the first and the debt for the expensive machinery would be paid off. Then the profits would roll in.
The next few batches were just like the first, loaded with gold! Then all of a sudden …
The Gold Ended!
They dug and they dug, but NOTHING! As quickly as they had found gold, it had disappeared! It was as if the mine had just dried up overnight. The two partners decided to quit and sold the machinery and the claim to a junk man, for just a few hundred dollars. After their big loss, they packed their belongings and took a train home with their tails between their legs.
However before they had even arrived home the junk man had hired an expert mining engineer to look at his newly acquired mine. He just wanted to make sure that the mine was indeed ‘tapped out’ before he began using the land for something else. It’s a good thing he did. WHY?
The expert’s report: The two men who sold him the mine had failed because they didn’t understand how gold fault lines work. He mapped out the fault line and he determined that gold would once again be struck …
Just THREE feet From Where They Had Stopped Digging!
The junk man fired up his new machinery and started digging. And just as the mining engineer had predicted, a MASSIVE amount of gold was 36 inches from where the others had stopped digging! In a short period of time the junk man took MILLIONS from that mine. And all because he did what?
He sought EXPERT help before giving up as the previous owner had done!
The Object Lesson:
Like hunting for gold, many people join network marketing and try their hands at striking it rich. Some like the original East Coast gentlemen have only limited success because of their choice of inappropriate tools (Or no tools or skills at all) and they strike out after only a short period of time. The growth of their organizations does not reach full potential. People in their organizations begin to leave. Recruiting efforts slow down etc. They themselves quit!
A few of their leaders remain however and want to persevere. They take advantage of the training offered by other leaders, and begin to continue their efforts based on that training.
The Result: They too hit pay dirt! Those leaders who left, were in essence just THREE FEET FROM THEIR OWN FORTUNE had they just realized the lesson of preparedness, persistence, & accurate knowledge. Had they remained and acted as their downline leaders did they too would be reaping the rewards!
But there may be an even more important lesson here:
The original owner of the mine who had stopped just THREE feet short of a fortune, learned of this development. He learned a valuable lesson about persistence.
He applied that lesson to his new business, insurance. He said that every time he was faced with resistance, and every time someone told him no, he remembered stopping just THREE foot from a fortune and he kept going until he got the desired result. What did he find as he persevered? That MOST of his sales came AFTER, the person had originally told him no. He eventually became one of the leading insurance salesmen in the country. Selling well over ONE MILLION dollars a year!
The Second Lesson: People do not become immediately sold on your business. Statistics show that 5 to 8 encounters are needed to create a rapport with and then achieve success with most individuals. Some of your most ardent networkers have come from an attitude of resistance to the concept of networking to go on to become networking ‘aces’ and eventually networking’ gurus’!
Questions: How many times in your life have you quit just THREE FEET from a fortune? How many times have you given up too soon?
I hope you remember this story, I know I will. And, like the East Coast gentleman who instead of ‘copping an attitude’ over his loss, learned from his loss of a fortune. He then applied that lesson with such success that he achieved a fortune for himself after all.
